My export looks wrong or won't generate

Diagnosing a failed or broken Miivo workbook / legacy export.

Exports are mostly automatic. When they go wrong, the symptom usually points at the cause.

Generation failed with an error

The export run failed before producing a file.

  • Refresh the project and try again. Transient backend hiccups are rare but possible.
  • Check the project for missing required values on items. If a required field is blank, some categories' exporter fails.
  • If failures repeat, contact the Miivo team with the project name and the error message.

File downloads but won't open in Excel

Try opening in:

  • Excel (Mac or Windows), current version.
  • Google Sheets, upload and open.
  • Numbers (Mac), supports .xlsx.

If none open the file, the file is probably corrupted in transit. Re-download from the export history, every export is preserved server-side.

Some columns are missing

In the Miivo workbook, hidden columns (via customize columns) are intentionally not exported. Check the customize-columns modal.

In the legacy export, custom columns are not exported at all, only standard columns mapped in the schema. If you need custom columns in the export, use the Miivo workbook instead.

Items are missing

Most likely causes:

  • The item is on a per-unit sheet for a unit that's been removed. Removed-unit items aren't exported.
  • The item is on a sheet marked not customer-shown and you're using a share link export from the public side.

Images aren't showing

  • Confirm the attachment is a supported format (see attachment formats).
  • Confirm the upload completed (no upload-in-progress indicator on the thumbnail).
  • Re-generate the export. Mid-upload exports can miss the most recent attachments.

Workbook is enormous

Excel workbooks bloat with embedded images. A project with hundreds of attachments can produce a workbook in the tens of megabytes.

  • Compress images before uploading, a 5 MB JPEG is rarely necessary; 500 KB usually suffices.
  • Down-resolution phone photos before uploading.
  • For one-off slim exports, generate after temporarily removing some attachments, but make sure to re-attach them after.

Generation is slow

Large projects with many images legitimately take 30–60 seconds. Don't navigate away mid-generation.

Versions in history don't reflect current data

Past exports are immutable snapshots. They reflect the project state at the moment they were generated. If the current data has changed, generate a new export, don't expect old exports to update.
